The class & the science:
- Niamh will guide you through 75 minutes of somatic, body-based practices, Polyvagal & neural exercises, mindful movement, grounding & conscious breathing
- The language of the nervous system is the felt sense. You will learn how to connect with sensations in your body so that you can process any experiences that your body is holding onto
- You cannot think yourself out of a stress or threat response, you need to show your nervous system & body that it is safe so that it can soften its defenses. This is done somatically through the body
- Each class will start with a few minutes of psychoeducation so that you can learn to recognise the different regulated & dysregulated states of your autonomic nervous system through the Polyvagal Ladder
-
You will meet your body where it is on the day, attending to the nervous system state that it is in, before down-regulating or up-regulating to get you closer to regulation
- The unresolved physiological activation that accompanies stressful & traumatic events can lead to holding patterns in theĀ body. By working with the body, you can deactivate this arousal energy that is keeping you stuck
- You will create balance, flexibility & resilience within your nervous system as you alternate between mindful mobilisation via the sympathetic nervous system and purposeful immobilisation within a felt sense of safety to engage the parasympathetic nervous system. Greater balance of the autonomic nervous system can potentially reduce the intensity and duration of physical and mental health symptoms
- The goal is to facilitate greater responsiveness of the Vagus Nerve. This is done by strengthening your current vagal tone so that your homebase becomes more regulated; building vagal efficiency to both engage & remove the vagal brake, allowing you to mobilise to meet challenges & return to states of rest & ease more easily afterwards
- By building your nervous system's capacity via the Vagus Nerve, you are expanding your window of tolerance & will be able to step towards the more expanded life that you may want with more ease
