Your nervous system has its homebase in one of the states of dysregulation, otherwise known as freeze, which is a combination of your Sympathetic Nervous System (fight or flight) and your Dorsal Vagal Complex (shutdown or collapse).

 

 

The answers you provided tell me that you spend most of your time in one of your dysregulated autonomic nervous system states, known as freeze. This is a blended state whereby both your sympathetic or fight or flight system, plus your Dorsal Vagal Complex, the state of immobilisation or shutting down, are both online. This basically means that your nervous system is picking up on danger cues in your external environment, internal environment or between you and other people, and it doesn’t know whether it should give you lots of energy so that you can fight or flee them, or whether it needs to slow you down and conserve your energy. The result is a system that feels like a deer stuck in headlights. You have all this mobilising energy from your sympathetic system, which is met with the need to immobilise and conserve energy from your Dorsal system. You will experience this as having lots of energy in your system but not being able to do anything about it, feeling tired but wired, your body will feel tight or tense, but you may feel disconnected from it or like you can’t do anything with that tension, your breath will go between being fast and shallow and slow and laboured, your mind will be racing but stuck or even blank, and you will be feeling like you need to do everything now but don’t know where to start, you will procrastinate in your tasks and you will feel stuck in many areas of your life.
Having your homebase in the dysregulated state of freeze means that your health is not optimised. You may have difficulty sleeping or want to sleep all the time, you may have loads of energy but only able to move really slowly, you may have digestive, hormone or immune system issues, you may have a huge to-do list but have no idea where to start, or feel stuck in your work, relationships or other areas of your life.
If this sounds like you, please know that you are not broken. Your autonomic nervous system is doing a wonderful job of protecting you because it is sensing a lot of danger around you, whether that is real or perceived danger, something that is actually happening or something that is reminding it of something that is unresolved from your past.
